WASHINGTON DC (FEBRUARY 21, 2025) — May Jung Law, a premier personal injury law firm in Washington, D.C., has filed a high-profile lawsuit on behalf of John Hopkins III, 81, and Claudia Hopkins, 82, who were brutally attacked outside a Giant Food supermarket at Cathedral Commons in Northwest D.C. The lawsuit, submitted in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, aims to hold Giant Food, LLC, Cathedral Commons Partners, Bozzuto Management Co., and their contracted security company accountable for negligent security leading to catastrophic injuries.
On February 23, 2022, John and Claudia Hopkins were violently assaulted after exiting the Giant Food supermarket. The attacker demanded money and viciously beat Mr. Hopkins with his own cane. He then turned on Mrs. Hopkins, striking her repeatedly until she collapsed. Both victims were left severely injured: Mr. Hopkins sustained a concussion, fractured facial bones, and a broken tooth, while Mrs. Hopkins suffered a traumatic brain injury, leaving her bedridden and unable to care for herself nearly three years later.
“This horrific event could and should have been prevented,” stated Je Yon Jung, Partner and lead attorney at May Jung Law. “In addition to the permanent injuries Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins have suffered, the most lasting impact is the devastation of their 50-year marriage. Mrs. Hopkins will likely never recover, and Mr. Hopkins is left to fight alone on their behalf.”
Jung continued, “People go to grocery stores like Giant every day to purchase food and necessities. We should be able to do so without facing harm. Giant Food and the property owners knew the risks yet failed to act, endangering their customers. Our clients deserve justice, and we will hold these corporations accountable.”
The Hopkins are seeking compensatory damages for medical expenses, physical and emotional suffering, and loss of quality of life. The lawsuit also requests punitive damages, citing the defendants’ reckless disregard for safety.
May Jung Law is a leading personal injury and premises liability firm in Washington, D.C., dedicated to fighting for victims of negligence and corporate irresponsibility. The firm’s experienced attorneys are committed to holding businesses and property owners accountable for unsafe conditions that lead to serious injuries.
