May Jung is seeking a Senior Associate with experience in the Civil Rights/Personal Injury space. The Firm has a busy civil rights docket including police misconduct, discrimination, and consumer protection actions. Familiarity and experience litigating Section 1983 and 1981 cases is a plus.
This position can be based remotely, ideally in California or Washington D.C., but not required. Our office staff are all 100% remote and located throughout the country. However, this position will require occasional travel for cases, team meetings, vendor relations, and other firm needs. Reporting to the Partners and/or VP of Legal Operations, the Senior Associate will be responsible for client relations, mediation, all aspects of leading litigation, arbitration, trials, motions, oral and written advocacy while interpreting laws, rules, and regulations for clients.
The Senior Associate is a critical position within the firm and comes with a compelling compensation package.
Position Summary
- Develop legal strategies to resolve cases favorably and cost-effectively for clients.
- Trial preparation and court appearances
- Provide legal advice on civil rights/personal injury issues by conducting legal research; keeping clients abreast of case developments; analyzing plaintiff’s and defendant’s positions; providing explanations of personal injury law concepts and actions.
- Develop civil rights/personal injury case by reviewing investigative findings, police reports, medical reports, medical examiner’s reports, reports of various state and federal agencies; consulting with experts; taking and defending depositions; and completing discovery process.
- Complete civil rights/personal injury case preparation by preparing legal briefs; developing strategies, arguments, and testimony.
- Maintain civil rights/personal injury case progress by following and enforcing productivity and quality standards; resolving operational problems; identifying work process improvements.
- Resolve cases by settling, mediating, arbitrating, and prosecuting defendants at trial; plan, organize, and present arguments and counter-arguments; engage expert witnesses; prepare and present evidence; prepare and interrogate witnesses; present closing arguments to jury.
- Improve quality results by studying, evaluating, and re-designing processes & implementing changes
- Coordinating communications with clients regarding the status of the litigation through various means (electronically through text/email, and by mail).Ensuring that relevant case information is properly entered into and tracked within the firm’s case management software including case stage/statuses, staff assignments, and all client correspondence
- Tracking the status of open cases within the firm (active dockets), including through communication with the assigned legal staff, to ensure that cases are being processed according to the needs of the current stage of the litigation
- Providing reports to the firm’s owner regarding the status of cases as requested
- Significant interaction with court system mediations, arbitration, trials, motions, oral and written advocacy
- Interprets laws, rulings, and regulations for clients
- Examines legal and medical data to determine insurance coverage, liability and damages
- Conducts research, interviews clients, and witnesses and handles other details in preparation for trials or hearings
Qualifications Summary for Senior Associate – Personal Injury
- Commitment to the firm’s social justice principles and advocating on behalf of our communities
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited College of University
- State Bar membership
- Minimum of 7+ years of experience in civil rights/personal injury litigation and trial/litigation experience in civil rights, medical malpractice, personal injury, wrongful death, or other civil litigation
- Scientific or medical background is a plus
- Exhibits a professional, courteous demeanor to external and internal clients
- Confers with colleagues to establish and verify the basis for legal proceedings
- Able to establish and build relationships with other professionals in the communities we serve to enhance our brand recognition, marketing efforts and client service
- Must be able to exercise extensive independent judgment to make decisions in carrying out assignments that have substantial impact on the department
- Ability to instruct, lead and evaluate employees; lead and motivate others; communicate effectively and use judgment, tact and discretion; quickly assimilate oral and written data, to analyze facts and draw logical conclusions; maintain favorable client/employee relations
